Art and design are neutral. The only way that art and design can be made to appear good or bad is simply how we perceive it. Some might say that it comes down to Form against function; how aesthetically pleasing a piece of art can be against how well it does a job.
Hume would argue that beauty of an object is in the eye of the beholder, whereas Descartes would dispute that there is a presence of a beholder, and that if a thing exists, it simply is. Now that art and design is dead, morality has made its way into the fray, and now we might be able to see the good or bad in art and design by comparing Form, function, and Morality; how good something looks, how well something works, and the differentiation of intentions.
